Nothing is known of Selene’s family. They lived in a hidden hut far from any trail or road in an unpopulated area of the region and none of the few people in the area were aware of their existence. If Abbott Aberdine had not happened by after a day of fishing she most likely would have never been found. As it was the Abbott himself claimed that a dark foreboding feeling and a pillar of light were what drew him to that concealed hut. He was not prepared for what he found inside. Within the hut were the remains of young Selene’s family. Her father they suspected was found hewn limb from limb and scattered about the small dwelling and is something that haunts Abbott Aberdine to this day. Her mother was found in almost an opposite state. She appeared serene and untouched almost statue like. She was holding a young sleeping Serene hidden behind a shield which Selene carries with her this day in memory of a family she can’t remember. There was never any signs of who or what had assailed the family only the outlines of bizarre and demonic looking creatures on the wall almost if drawn in ash or charcoal.
The Abbott and the church took in the young child Selene and raised her as a steward of the church. The child took well to her studies in her youth and had a passion for the religion and it’s histories. As she came upon her 9th or 10th summer she disappeared one evening only to found several days later in a ruin not far from the church, asleep and murmuring not easily stirred. She was clutching her family’s shield with no memory as how she came to be there. From that point on Selene took that shield with her everywhere she went like most children would a blanket or doll. The Abbott and the other clergy attempted to separate the child from the shield but unfailingly the shield would disappear and Selene would soon be found with it once more. A young girl of that age was quite a site to see going to and fro with a large shield and such a site being so foreign to the other children of the area Selene faced much teasing and harassment from the children of the area. This caused her to withdraw into books and her studies. She became enamored with the tales of the paladins of the church and longed to be a champion protector such as them defending their faith and the people such as they. The Abbott and the clergymen tried to dissuade her from this path on many occasions as they felt it was not the place or position for a respectable woman. What they found was that this young woman would not be dissuaded and began taking to training herself in martial combat over a dozen times she was found attacking some tree or fighting off all sorts of woodland denizen with whatever she could scrounge as a weapon most often a spear like branch or just her fist and that shield. There was no fighting the stubbornness of youth. The Abbott arranged on midsummer of her 16th year to go with father Baelish to pilgrimage to the monastery and begin her training with the church where at least her sparring would be taught and supervised and less likely to be eaten by a rogue owlbear, a thought that kept the Abbott up most nights. Prior to her leaving Abbott Aberdine met with Selene to say farewell as she was like a daughter to her and it would be quite some time before they would meet again. At this time the Abbott disclosed that there had been another item found with Selene, a book or journal in some unknown language it had been a hobby of such to the Abbott over the years to decipher this language and discern more about the nature but he had been unable to decipher or find anyone who could in all the years hence.
From here begins the tale of Selene Orshandi, Paladin, Sacred Shield and Warrior of the Holy Light of Sarenrae and her journey in finding herself and her lineage.
